Easy Tips to Prepare your Lawn for Summer

Date: 07-11-2016

Summer, when we throw the doors open and live as much outside as we do in!

Summer is on its way and now is the perfect time to prepare your lawn for Australia’s favourite season.

Depending on the type of lawn you have there will be a few simple tasks you can do to get your lawn looking lush, green and ready for the coming summer months.

If your lawn is a ‘Warm Season’ lawn (like Kikuyu, Buffalo or Couch) it might still be recovering from the winter when this type of lawn is dormant and loses it’s colour.  If it looks a bit brown or has dirt patches from the winter you can bring it back to life with colour and growth with a quick and easy fertilise.  You’ll need a high analysis fertiliser like our Landscape Range All Season Reno Fertiliser.  You’ll need around 20-30 grams per square metre  and for best results apply every three months.

Don’t worry too much about small patches in your lawn, these will eventually repair themselves as the regeneration begins post winter.  If the patches are more unsightly and large you can oversow with a sprinkle of lawn seed and water in to fill them in.  Choose a seed that matches your current lawn type so the patches aren’t noticeable. If you’ve got a Buffalo lawn note that it’s unavailable in a seed form, but any other warm season seed Couch or Kikuyu will blend in nicely.

If you’ve got a Cool Season lawn (like Fescue, Ryegrass or Bentgrass), now is the time to  prepare the lawn for the warmer season where heat and higher temperatures will put it under stress.  Again, a high analysis fertiliser will give it a boost, plus as you’ll need regular irrigation throughout the summer to keep the dark green cool season lawn colour you might want to consider installing automatic irrigation system.  There are plenty on the market and aren’t difficult to set up.
