Can you grow grass in Winter in Australia?
In general, you’ll get success when sowing lawn seed in Winter. But there are a few key things to remember:
- Up north, where it’s warm, it’s business as usual for sowing. Soil temps are higher so germinations times don’t vary too much. As a rough guide, you can choose from Warm Season grasses like Couch and Kikuyu if you are North of Brisbane.
- South of Brissy choose a blend which can include a bit of both e.g our All Season Couch or All Season Kikuyu.. or choose cool season grasses to oversow.
- Down south, soil temps are very low. So always choose cool season grasses for success. Here are a few options:
1. Ryegrass Blends : It grows quickly and is often used for to oversow buffalo and couch lawns for temporary green in cooler months.
- See our All Winter Green Blend here, plus our TTT Ryegrass Blend
2. Tall Fescue: Tall fescue varieties can tolerate the cold and are good for winter lawns or year-round mixes.
- See our XRE Tall Fescue here
3. Kentucky Bluegrass: It prefers cooler climates but can be grown in parts of southern Australia during winter with enough moisture.
- See our Premium Blend here
To sow grass seed in winter, prepare the soil by clearing debris and adding organic matter. Keep the soil moist throughout the germination and growth period. If you live in a region with regular frosts, it may be better to wait for warmer weather in spring to sow grass seed. See our Lawn Sowing instructions here.
