How to get the best results when growing lawn seed

The anticipation of waiting and watching your lawn is exciting and everyone wants great results from their lawn projects.  Check out our tips below for getting the best results!

Use our guides to help you select the right seed (and remember quality seed is best!)

  • sowing the right seed at the right time of year is crucial!  Read the product descriptions carefully and contact us for advice if you're unsure.  With the optimum conditions your lawn will get off to a better start and have better long term outcomes.

Use the recommended sowing rate

  • Each of our product pages displays the sowing rate for that particular seed.  Each seed variety will have a different sowing rate, so by taking careful note of the sowing rate you'll end up with a thick, lush lawn rather than a sparse and thin yard.

Use a Starter Fertiliser

  • a Starter Fertiliser will provide the major elements to get germination off to the best start.  Including Phosphorus for good root structure, Potassium to build the plant's strength and resistance to disease plus lower Nitrogen levels for young grass. View our KickStart Fertiliser here.

Sow your lawn seed evenly

  • To get an even coverage divide the seed and your area into lots so it's more managable to spread.   Then go one way across and then double back over in the other direction.  You can use a broadcast spreader like this (link) for an even distribution.

Water carefuly and then deeply

  • Newly sown seed needs to be watered carefully with a fine spray so the seeds aren't blasted around. While your new lawn is establishing the surface always needs to be kept moist.
  • Once your lawn has established it will respond better to deep waterings rather than more frequent light sprinkling.

Monitor the conditions and act accordingly

  • If it happens to be particularly windy it's important to replace lost moisture with a soak of your lawn.  You may need to water frequently during periods of drought.
